It’s always a sign that the new football season is well and truly underway when the Champions League matches begin. And what a cracker we have here in this clash between two giants of European football.
Bayern will go into this encounter full of confidence after their 5 – 0 victory at home to Hamburg at the weekend, whilst Chelsea could only manage a 2 – 2 draw against lowly Brentford, a match they were fully expected to win.
Odds and Predictions
The football betting sites have made Bayern overwhelming favourites for this match at odds of 1.64, the price for the draw is 4.33, and Chelsea is available at 4.75. Coming up with tips for this game is pretty tricky, as we are still only a few games into the season. But we watched the Chelsea match on Saturday evening and despite the result, we were impressed with their performance.
On saying that, though, we don’t think they are good enough to beat Bayern at this stage of the season, so for the first one of our predictions, we are going for a win for Bayern Munich.
As for the correct scoreline, we think a 2 – 0 win for Bayern is worth a small investment. Odds of 9.50 are available for this bet, which is pretty generous in our opinion.
Head-to-Head Record
Whilst carrying out our research for this match, we were surprised to discover that these teams have only played each other head-to-head five times in their history. Bayern winning three of these matches, Chelsea winning once, and one game ending in a draw.
The last time these teams played H2H was over two legs in 2020: Bayern winning 4 – 1 at home and 3 – 1 away, giving them a convincing victory of 7 – 1 on aggregate.
Current Form & Key Stats
Team | Last 5 Matches | Goals Scored | Goals Conceded | Clean Sheets | Expected Goals (avg) | Expected Goals Against (avg) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bayern Munich | W-W-W-W-W | 19 | 5 | 1 | 3.24 | 0.53 |
Chelsea | D-W-W-D-W | 13 | 4 | 2 | 1.77 | 1.19 |
Key Players to Watch
It will come as no surprise when we say that there are two players that all UK punters will have their eyes on: Harry Kane for Bayern Munich and Cole Palmer for Chelsea.
Both players are in top form, Harry Kane scoring two goals in the 5 – 0 victory over Hamburg at the weekend, and even though Cole Palmer was a sub in the match against Brentford, it only took him five minutes to score. And it is a stone-cold certainty that these two players will be up for it on Wednesday evening.
They may be teammates for England, but there will be no love lost as they line up against each other for this fascinating fixture.
Bayern Munich Expected Line Up
Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1): Manuel Neuer; Josip Stanišić, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah, Konrad Laimer; Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka; Luis Díaz, Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise; Harry Kane.
Chelsea Expected Line Up
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Robert Sánchez; Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Cucurella; Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández; Pedro Neto, Enzo Fernández, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens; João Pedro.
Final Thoughts & Season Implications
Bayern and Chelsea will both want to get this season’s Champions League campaign off to a winning start. Don’t forget that a top-eight position means that teams will go directly into the league of 16 as opposed to having to qualify through the two-legged play-off stages.
Chelsea and Bayern Munich are both available at odds of 13.0 to go on and win the Champions League title. And to be perfectly honest, we are surprised that Bayern are available at that price. We thought they would be much shorter, so there is definitely value to be had by backing them at this stage of the competition.
If Chelsea lose this match, as we expect they will, we may consider backing them with small stakes to win the competition if the odds drift significantly, as this kind of bet often represents great value.
