- Portugal have placed Cristiano Ronaldo under preventive suspension.
- The FPF has opened an urgent disciplinary investigation into his decision to leave camp.
- Jorge Jesus has kept the door open for Ronaldo to return once the matter is resolved.
Ronaldo’s Portugal future has taken another complicated turn. The Portuguese Football Federation has opened disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo and placed him under preventive suspension following his decision to leave the national team camp after his dispute with Jorge Jesus.
The key point is that this is not yet a final punishment. The investigation will determine whether Ronaldo’s actions warrant a further sanction, with the case receiving urgent status. That uncertainty could influence how Portugal are viewed on football betting sites UK ahead of their next international fixtures, particularly if the process extends towards November.
Ronaldo’s Walkout Now Has Formal Consequences
Ronaldo’s relationship with Jorge Jesus deteriorated after he remained an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory away to Norway. The 41-year-old later claimed there had been a breach of trust involving discussions over his playing time and how the situation would subsequently be explained publicly.
He eventually left camp and later apologised for his conduct, accepting that punishment could follow. The FPF has now moved the matter into its disciplinary process, which will remain private until the investigation concludes.
For me, that distinction matters. Ronaldo may feel genuinely aggrieved about how Jesus handled the situation, but walking away from an international camp carries consequences, particularly when you are captain. A disagreement with the manager cannot give any player complete control over when they remain with the squad.
Portugal Have Already Shown They Can Cope Without Ronaldo
The uncomfortable part for Ronaldo is how well Portugal have performed without him. Across the matches in which he was either unused or absent, Portugal won three times, while Goncalo Ramos scored three goals. They also moved to the top of their Nations League group with four consecutive victories.
That does not make Ronaldo irrelevant. His 146 goals in 234 appearances remain extraordinary, and Jesus has publicly said he can return if he wants to. FPF president Pedro Proenca has also stated that everyone within the federation wants Ronaldo back.
The problem is no longer whether Portugal need Ronaldo to score goals. It is whether Ronaldo, Jesus and the federation can establish a working relationship in which the manager controls selection. If he returns, that understanding has to come first.
