- City’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa ended Maresca’s perfect Premier League start
- Midfield balance and defensive mistakes remain major concerns
- City’s reliance on Erling Haaland leaves little room for injuries or poor form
Seven straight Premier League wins gave Manchester City an impressive start under Enzo Maresca, but Aston Villa have provided the first proper reality check. The 2-1 defeat at Villa Park left City level with Arsenal on points and exposed weaknesses that previous results had largely managed to hide.
That matters when assessing the title race through football betting sites UK. City remain firmly in contention, but their record deserves context. Outside the excellent victory at Anfield, several wins came against sides sitting in the bottom half, while defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Villa have arrived when the standard of opposition increased.
Maresca Still Has a Midfield Balance Problem
The biggest tactical concern is through the middle. Following the departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva, Elliot Anderson can find himself carrying too much defensive responsibility. Villa exploited those spaces in transition, particularly when City committed numbers forward.
Maresca could have protected Anderson by starting Ayyoub Bouaddi, while questions remain over how Enzo Fernandez fits into the system. Rayan Cherki adds invention but has already been substituted at half-time four times, suggesting Maresca still does not completely trust the balance he provides.
For me, this is where Man City look most vulnerable. You can carry an adventurous attacker when the midfield behind him controls transitions. At the moment, that security is not always there.
Defensive Errors Are Becoming Too Frequent
Maresca started four natural centre-backs against Villa and still did not get the solidity he wanted. Marc Guehi made another costly mistake, Gianluigi Donnarumma was at fault for Villa’s second goal. Ruben Dias has also endured difficult moments this season.
Those individual errors are beginning to form a pattern. City have conceded chances against opponents they would normally expect to control, and Donnarumma has already needed outstanding saves to rescue results. A title-winning defence cannot depend on emergency interventions every week.
Haaland’s Importance Creates Another Risk
The other concern is impossible to ignore. Erling Haaland remains City’s only specialist senior striker, while Antoine Semenyo, who could deputise, is injured. Without Haaland’s goals, City would currently have nine fewer league points.
That is an enormous dependency across a 38-game season. City have enough talent to challenge anybody, but Maresca still needs better midfield protection, fewer defensive mistakes and another reliable source of goals. Villa did not destroy City’s title hopes, but they showed exactly where those hopes could unravel.
