- Desire Doué fires PSG ahead on 38’ to lead 1-0 at HT
- Ousmane Dembele limps off on 19’ with a left thigh issue
- Barça threaten as Safonov and the woodwork stand firm
Paris has its moment. PSG 1-0 Barcelona at half-time, and it’s the French champions who’ve landed the first real punch in a heavyweight UEFA Champions League clash that could decide who tops the league phase tonight. Both sides arrived perfect in the section, but Luis Enrique’s men look the sharper outfit so far.

Doué’s Class Breaks The Deadlock
The opener was all about Desire Doué’s swagger. After Lamine Yamal coughed up possession, Doué spun into space, skipped past a pair of defenders and drilled low beyond Joan Garcia from 20 yards. It was a ruthless, 38th-minute finish that felt every inch the difference-maker in a tight contest.
It wasn’t PSG’s only flash of menace either. Earlier, Doué and Fabián Ruiz sliced through Barcelona, prompting a flurry of efforts that Garcia somehow repelled in a frantic scramble. At the other end, Matvey Safonov produced a smart stop from Fermin Lopez, while Raphinha was inches away from turning in a wicked low cross. Margins, as ever at this level.
Barça’s Response And The Injury Subplot
One big caveat for PSG: Ousmane Dembele’s early exit on 19 minutes after clutching his left thigh. It dulled some of Paris’s thrust, though Bradley Barcola and company kept asking questions. There was also a nervy VAR check after Fermin Lopez’s high boot brushed Pacho during a rebound melee, but no red was shown.
Context matters. PSG’s 4-2 statement at Manchester City last week underlined why they’re favourites to defend their crown, while Hansi Flick’s Barcelona have battered Feyenoord 5-1 and Galatasaray 4-1. This is a step up in class for the Spaniards and they know it. Expect Flick to sharpen the press and get runners beyond the lines; they’ve shown enough to believe an equaliser is on.
Elsewhere at 8pm, there were twists aplenty: Liverpool drew 2-2 with Villarreal at the break, Manchester City led AEK Athens 2-0, Napoli edged Bodo/Glimt 2-1, Porto and PSV were goalless, Roma were 2-0 up on Slovan Bratislava, and Stuttgart led Atletico Madrid 1-0.
Still, the headline is Paris. If PSG keep their discipline and find the next goal, the points—and top spot—are theirs to lose. If Barcelona land the first punch after the restart, we’re in for a frantic finish under the lights.
