- Ronaldo claims Jorge Jesus broke his word to him twice during Portugal’s Nations League camp.
- The captain apologised to supporters and team-mates for his own conduct.
- Ronaldo insists he has not retired and remains available after any potential punishment.
Cristiano Ronaldo has finally given his version of the dispute that ended with him walking out of the Nations League camp, and it paints a picture of a relationship with Jorge Jesus where trust has become the central problem.
The 41-year-old claims Jesus broke agreements with him twice, first over his expected involvement against Norway and then over how the manager would publicly explain the situation. For those following Portugal’s current form on the football betting sites UK, the bigger issue now concerns whether player and coach can repair that relationship before the next international window.
Ronaldo Says Jesus Broke His Word Twice
According to Ronaldo, the original plan centred on carefully managing his minutes. He expected not to feature against Norway, only for Jesus to tell him on matchday that he could play around 30 minutes. Ronaldo agreed, warmed up during the second half and then remained on the bench.
Ronaldo says the pair later held a meeting and agreed that Jesus would clarify the episode publicly. An eight-point document was prepared, according to the forward, stating among other things that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time and had respected the manager’s decisions.
When Jesus did not deliver that explanation at his press conference, Ronaldo regarded it as another broken promise and decided to leave camp. Jesus had previously denied that such an agreement existed, so there are plainly two versions of events here.
Ronaldo Accepts His Share of the Blame
One part of Ronaldo’s statement deserves credit. He did not pretend walking away was acceptable simply because he felt wronged. He apologised for leaving his team-mates and for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match. He also accepted that his status as captain makes the incident more serious and said the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him if appropriate.
That accountability matters, but it does not solve the underlying issue. A captain and manager do not need to agree on every decision, but they do need enough trust to work together. At the moment, that looks badly damaged.
Most importantly, Ronaldo has not retired from international football. He says that if he remains fit and plays regularly for Al-Nassr, he intends to make himself available once any suspension has been served.
So this is not a farewell yet. The next question is much more uncomfortable for Portugal. Jesus has already left the door open, Ronaldo still wants to compete, and now both men have to decide whether they can actually work together again.
