- Estevao has played just 47 Premier League minutes this season
- Chelsea fans called for the Brazilian during the Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool
- A January move could become an option if his lack of game time continues
Xabi Alonso has his first awkward Chelsea selection issue, and it involves one of the club’s most exciting young players. Estevao Willian has slipped to the fringes of the first team, playing only 47 minutes in the Premier League and remaining unused as Chelsea exited the Carabao Cup against Liverpool.
That is quite a change for a player who looked ready to become a Stamford Bridge favourite last season. Anyone assessing Chelsea through football betting sites UK would still see enormous attacking depth, but Alonso now has to work out how one of the squad’s most naturally creative players fits into his system.
Alonso’s System Is Working Against Estevao
The problem is not simply that Alonso does not rate the teenager. He has repeatedly insisted that Estevao will have an important role, while also pointing to the physical demands of English football and the winger’s recovery from injury. Chelsea’s manager clearly wants more defensive reliability before trusting him with greater responsibility.
There is also a tactical issue. Alonso enjoyed his greatest success at Bayer Leverkusen with a 3-4-2-1 system that did not rely on traditional wingers. At Chelsea, Pedro Neto offers the defensive discipline Alonso values, while Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer have established themselves further forward.
That leaves Estevao searching for a natural opening. Even with Joao Pedro unavailable against Tottenham, Alonso changed the shape rather than hand the Brazilian a start. When injuries do not create an opportunity, a young player is entitled to wonder where the minutes will come from.
Chelsea Cannot Afford to Waste This Talent
The frustration among supporters became obvious at Anfield, where Chelsea fans chanted Estevao’s name while he remained on the bench. That reaction reflects what they saw last season, when he scored five times in nine matches during one impressive spell and produced memorable Champions League performances.
Reports suggest Estevao is interested in a January move if his situation does not improve, although Chelsea may resist letting him leave. With no European football and the Carabao Cup campaign already over, there are fewer matches available for Alonso to spread around his squad.
For me, a carefully chosen loan would make more sense than months of substitute appearances if Alonso cannot offer meaningful minutes. Estevao is still only 19, so this does not need to become a permanent split. Chelsea simply have to decide whether Estevao development is better served at Stamford Bridge or somewhere he will actually start.
