- Haaland asked to come off after 67 minutes against Portugal.
- Norway boss Stale Solbakken stopped short of confirming an injury.
- Manchester City face Liverpool next, making Haaland’s fitness a major concern.
Manchester City supporters had every reason to worry when Erling Haaland limped off during Norway’s 2-1 Nations League defeat to Portugal, but the early signs suggest fatigue rather than a significant injury may have caused his withdrawal.
Haaland signalled to Norway’s bench that he wanted to come off and left the pitch after 67 minutes in Porto. With City heading into a Premier League meeting with Liverpool, his condition will naturally influence the thinking around the match on football betting sites UK.
Haaland’s Workload Looks Like the Bigger Concern
Norway manager Stale Solbakken did not confirm that Haaland had suffered an injury. Instead, he explained that the striker had already shown signs of tiredness against Wales and that the pair discussed his workload before facing Portugal.
That context matters. Haaland had played the full 90 minutes in Norway’s opening three Nations League matches and also came into the international window following a demanding start to the domestic season. Solbakken admitted he was pleased to get roughly an hour of strong football from his captain.
For me, this looks more like a warning over accumulated minutes than a conventional injury setback. When a player asks to come off and starts moving awkwardly, nobody takes chances, particularly with a striker this important.
City Cannot Afford to Run Haaland Into the Ground
The concern for City is simple. Haaland remains their only recognised senior specialist centre-forward and has carried an enormous attacking responsibility. Solbakken acknowledged that the 26-year-old plays almost everything for his club, which makes managing his minutes increasingly important.
He has also maintained extraordinary numbers for Norway, scoring 65 goals in 59 international appearances. That production makes resting him difficult for club and country, but continually pushing him through fatigue creates its own risk.
City will therefore care less about whether Haaland completed another international fixture and more about how he feels when he returns to training. There is no confirmed serious injury at this stage, which is the encouraging part. The wider issue is whether his schedule is beginning to catch up with him.
