Tuchel Is Right to Make England’s Stars Earn Their Places

  • Scott’s first England start increases the competition for Rice.
  • Injury rules the Bournemouth midfielder out against Czechia.
  • Teenage forward Rio Ngumoha already features in Tuchel’s senior squad.
  • Thomas Tuchel has good reason to keep an open mind about England’s midfield. Alex Scott impressed alongside Elliot Anderson in the 7-0 victory over Croatia, taking his first opportunity to start with Declan Rice absent. The manager has since made clear that Scott can challenge Rice for selection.

That makes the eventual midfield pairing worth watching for anyone comparing England markets on football betting sites. The strongest combination should matter more than the individual reputations.

Scott Gives Tuchel a Genuine Alternative

Tuchel still regards Rice as one of Europe’s leading midfielders. His argument is that England needs greater depth and variety, rather than relying on the same two central players throughout a campaign.

He is right. One excellent performance should earn further opportunities, although it should not settle every selection argument. Tuchel’s task is to identify partnerships that can retain possession under pressure without leaving the defence exposed. Scott has given him another combination to assess.

Unfortunately, that assessment must wait. Scott has returned to Bournemouth for further checks and will miss the Czechia match at Wembley on Tuesday 6 October. His absence interrupts a promising introduction, but it should not erase what he contributed against Croatia.

England’s Young Players Need Meaningful Opportunities

Scott is not the only emerging player attracting attention. Tuchel considers Fulham midfielder Josh King close to a senior call-up, adding another candidate to Tuchel selection discussions.

The manager has already demonstrated his willingness to leave established names out. Neither Cole Palmer nor Phil Foden made England’s 2026 World Cup squad, despite their prominence at club level.

For me, the next measure of this approach is the responsibility Tuchel gives his newcomers. A brief appearance when a result is secure tells a manager something, but asking a player to control midfield with the scores level provides a different examination.

There is no need to change the side simply because another talented youngster becomes available. Equally, promising players should not have to wait for several injuries before earning consideration. Tuchel should reward performances with meaningful minutes, then judge whether those players improve the team. That is a fair challenge for Scott and an equally fair expectation of England’s established starters.
