- Konsa and Scott withdraw before England’s Wembley meeting with Czechia.
- Eight players have left the squad through injury during this camp.
- Scott faces a reported absence of up to two months.
Thomas Tuchel has another selection problem after Ezri Konsa and Alex Scott returned to their clubs for assessment. England will prepare for their Nations League match against Czechia on Tuesday 6 October with 22 players remaining in camp.
The withdrawals change the assessment of Tuesday’s fixture on football betting sites. For me, the question is how England maintain their balance with different personnel, rather than whether their established names can carry them through.
Scott Deserved Another Chance to Impress
Scott’s setback feels particularly harsh. The Bournemouth midfielder impressed alongside Elliot Anderson on his first senior England start in Saturday’s 7-0 victory over Croatia. He had given Tuchel a convincing reason to select him again.
Major UK media reports that a quadriceps injury could keep Scott out for up to two months.
Tuchel had suggested Scott’s performance increased the competition for Declan Rice’s midfield place.
That is exactly the competition England should welcome. Rice does not become a lesser player because somebody else performs well, but reputation should never remove the need to earn selection. Scott’s immediate priority must be recovery, yet his performance deserves to remain part of Tuchel’s thinking when he returns.
Konsa’s Withdrawal Adds to Arsenal’s Concerns
Konsa’s departure creates uncertainty for Arsenal as well. William Saliba remains unavailable with a back problem, while Kai Havertz and Christos Tzolis have suffered hamstring injuries during the international break. Arsenal need clarity on Konsa’s condition before judging what his absence might mean.
England’s withdrawals now total eight. Rice, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento left at the start of camp, with Nico O’Reilly following later. James Garner, Morgan Gibbs-White and Rico Lewis have joined the squad during the window.
Tuchel can reasonably feel frustrated, but the remaining players still give him enough quality to demand a strong performance. England need replacements who understand their responsibilities, not players who feel obliged to reproduce everything an absent team-mate does. Keeping the midfield connected to the defence would tell us more about this squad’s adaptability than simply counting the missing names.
