Corner Betting Explained in Depth

Corner Betting - most common options

When it comes to corner betting football fans probably already know what we are doing here - betting on the number of corners that we think will come in during a football match. There are a number of options when it comes to corner betting, but the most common of these is the total number of corners awarded in a single game.

This is a similar market to total goals in the sense that the bookmaker will list a number of lines, and it’s the task of the bettor to stake Over or Under that line. 7.5 might be average so, if you think there will be eight or more corners, you should bet above that line, but if you’re expecting seven or less, you should go below.

Some bookies will apply a little twist on this by having markets in place for total corners on each half. This works on the same principle as above but, in this market, we are specifying the totals in either the first or the second half of the match.

Another option for corner betting on football is more commonly known as the match corner bet. This is a separate market where punters have to nominate which of the two teams on show will be awarded the most corners or they can take a third bet on a tie.

A smaller section of sportsbooks will also publish odds on the team that will take the first corner. This is a simple choice between two teams, and it can be a useful pick, as we will see later on.

Finally, we should also mention that in play corner betting is also popular among a section of the community. The bets that are listed above should all be available in the live markets once a game has kicked off, and they will remain in place until the final whistle.

In terms of strategy, the corner match bet is a market where value can be found at times. Corner match betting markets tend to follow odds that are linked to the match result. Therefore, the strongest team is more likely to have odds against price, while the weaker opposition should rise above even money.

The perception is that the stronger team will attack more, and they will create more opportunities where a corner can arise. That’s an obvious conclusion to draw, but, of course, there will be times when the odds are upset, and the outsiders will deliver.

A team might be on a losing streak, but perhaps they just lack a bit of firepower right in front of the goal. To establish whether there is some value in the market, take a look at stats relating to possession and shots on goal. If a side ranks strongly in those areas, they could be the best bet in terms of corner match betting.

For other corner betting markets, such as totals, the research should be simpler. If there are two attacking sides on show, then there should be more corners but if you are expecting a cagey game, the totals may be fewer.

Corner Betting: How to Stake

The first point to note in this section is that not all bookmakers quote for corner betting. It’s considered to be a niche by some and as a rough figure around 50% of outlets list odds for this side market.

Therefore, if this type of bet sounds interesting, you should remember this point. Many of the mainstream operators will cover it, and that list tends to increase for the really big matches.

Having established that your sportsbook offers bets, staking on any of those corner betting markets is really easy. Just find your match and then click on the button that lists all of the side bets. Click on the option that you want to take, and a betslip will open. Type in the amount that you want to bet, and then hit confirm.

It really is that simple and, once you know your way around the bookmaker’s site, you can place that bet in less than a minute.

Can You Use Corner Betting within a Formula?

The answer to this question is yes, but it largely depends on which corner betting market you are looking to take. The total corners across the game bet have so many different options that it’s not really suitable but the market to focus on is the team to win the most corners.

Formulas such as Martingale, Reverse Martingale, Paroli and Fibonacci work best when there are only two possible outcomes, so this is the market that we should use. Either Team A will have the most corners, or it will be Team B - there’s nothing else to consider.

Keep that point in mind when looking at the potential for formulas but for now, let’s take a look at some examples of corner betting in practice.

Let’s Look at Those Examples

All of those formulas mentioned above are considered in greater detail in other areas of this website but, for these examples, we’re going to using Martingale. This is the simplest of the strategies and involves doubling your stake if a bet loses and repeating the process until a winner comes in. Martingale works best with odds of Even Money or higher so, for this exercise, we’re assuming that we’re betting in the corner match market. Our starting stake is £10 on Liverpool (team A) to be awarded more corners than Manchester United (Team B).

Make a profit from corner betting

Example One

Bet One: Stake £10.00 on Team A to be awarded the most corners at 2/1: Bet wins, total returns are £30.00 - profit = £20.00

Example Two

Bet One: Stake £10.00 on Team A to be awarded the most corners at 2/1: Bet Loses, stake forfeited

Bet Two: Stake £20.00 on Team A to be awarded the most corners at 2/1: Bet wins, total returns = £60.00. Overall profit = £30.00

Example Three

Bet One: Stake £10.00 on Team A to be awarded the most corners at 2/1: Bet Loses, stake forfeited

Bet Two: Stake £20.00 on Team A to be awarded the most corners at 2/1: Bet Loses, stake forfeited

Bet Three: Stake £40.00 on Team A to be awarded the most corners at 2/1: Bet Loses, stake forfeited

Bet Four: Stake £80.00 on Team A to be awarded the most corners at 2/1: Bet Wins, returns = £240.00. Overall profit is £90.00.

Of course, the odds in question won’t be 2/1 in every case, so punters would need to adjust stakes accordingly. However, the principle here is always the same, and as long as your bankroll can keep doubling, a profit will drop once a winning bet lands.

The potential to include a formula makes corner betting one of the more interesting side markets, but it’s also one where research can really help at any time. Total corners is a more complex option with a number of choices but, when you have match corner betting, the choice is between just two teams. And it should be remembered that the team that loses the game may still end up with the most corners, so there is some potential for value picks.
